Independent Project Grading Standards

CATEGORY	STANDARDS FOR SUCCESS
Effort and Preparation (40%)  Student meets project benchmarks on time; project evidences effort and commitment	Student meets with TF to discuss project before the week 5 session and comes well-prepared Student submits project proposal before the week 6 session Project proposal is complete and evidences effort and self-review Student workshops project with peers during week 9 and comes well-prepared Project progresses between the week 5 meeting and week 9 workshop session Writing and/or other product evidences effort and self-review Shareable component evidences effort and self-review  Student presents at the showcase and comes well-prepared
Topic Choice (10%)  Project clearly addresses an ethical issue pertinent to the student’s experience(s)	Project clearly addresses and/or informs a normative ethical question Project explicitly includes normative ethical or social reasoning or analysis Student motivates the importance of the chosen issue or topic Student explicitly connects the project topic to one or more of their own experiences
Integration of Course Material (25%)  Project integrates concepts/tools covered in the course	Student explicitly incorporates at least one concept or tool discussed in the course (i.e., uses, discusses, critiques, or builds upon it) In doing so, student demonstrates mastery of that concept or tool
Creativity and Rigor (25%)  Project evidences independent thought and analytical rigor	Student demonstrates independent thought, including independent normative thought (i.e., student does more than report others’ ideas) Student analyzes an ethical issue, breaking it into parts and employing critical reasoning skills Student’s reasoning and analysis is rigorous
