LL EduCATE: Introduction to Engineering Concepts

Mechanical Engineering

A branch that combines physics and mathematics to design, analyze, manufacture, and maintain physical systems.  It involves the design, production, and operation of machinery.

Specializations:

  • Automobiles (automotive engineer) including electric motors, machinery controls, lighting and wiring, radar and navigation systems, communications, power generation, control, and transmission
  • Aircraft/spacecraft (aeronautics/aerospace engineer), including electric motors, machinery controls, lighting and wiring, radar and navigation systems, communications, and power generation, control, and transmission
  • Marine systems
  • Thermofluids engineering
  • Alternative/renewable energy
  • Machine design and analysis
  • Heating/ventilating/air conditioning (HVAC)

Skills:

  • Math (geometry, statistics, calculus, trigonometry)
  • Sciences (chemistry, physics)
  • Engineering fundamentals
  • Computer-aided design (CAD)
  • Quality control
  • Manufacturing systems
  • Circuits ad electronics
  • Fluid mechanics
  • Robotics
  • Programming/algorithms

Societies:

  • American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME): SME promotes and enhances the technical competency and professional welfare of its members. Through quality programs and activities in mechanical engineering, it better enables its practitioners to contribute to the wellbeing of humankind. ASME offers additional courses, publications, and certifications.
  • Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE): As a global community of mechanical engineers represented in over 140 countries, the Institution is the largest network of mechanical engineering knowledge, skill and opportunity in the world. With a growing membership based outside the UK, IMechE develops and maintains key partnerships with leading multi-national employers to ensure their technical workforces are trained to the highest standard. By equipping engineers with the right skills, knowledge, and experience to help them develop, IMechE contributes to strengthening the world’s leading companies.
  • International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP): CIRP is the world leading organization in production engineering research and is at the forefront of design, optimization, control, and management of processes, machines, and systems.
  • Electric Auto Association (EAA): EAA promotes the advancement and widespread adoption of electricity powered automobiles.
  • Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE): SAE provides technical information and expertise used in designing, building, maintaining, and operating self-propelled vehicles for use on land or sea, in air or space.
  • American Astronautical Society (AAS): AAS is the premier independent scientific and technical group exclusively dedicated to the advancement of space science and exploration in the United States.
  • Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA): EAA is dedicated to serving all of aviation by fostering and encouraging individual participation, high standards, and access to the world of flight in an environment that promotes freedom, safety, family, and personal fulfillment.
  • Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME): The society is dedicated to serving its members and the manufacturing community through the advancement of professionalism, knowledge, and learning.
  • American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE): The Society is organized for the sole purpose of advancing the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration for the public’s benefit through research, standards writing, continuing education, and publications.
